Hobsonville Yacht Club Winter Dinghy Race Series Report The first two races held on Sunday 21st and 28th May were sailed in very light winds, making it virtually impossible for the Opti fleet to sail against the tide. Both days saw a good turnout with nine and then eight Optis out racing. Both days racing had to be abandoned due to the strengthening tide and the fleet drifting away and being towed back by the Patrol boats. The last attempt to race we tried a Le Mans start from the jetty, downtide to a mark close under the the parking zone at the end of the road, and back to the start line. Only one Opti completed that circuit. At least the weather was warmer and the kids came ashore with smiles, despite the frustrating conditions. We were all cheered up with a wonderful warming soup and bread that Erica had kindly brought down, as an after sailing warm up. Sailor of the day went to Phoebe, as she managed to get round the course unaided, on her first outing solo in an Opti. Pirate of the day went to Mackenzie who used both fair means and foul to propel her Opti around the course! Well done to all who took part and thanks to the parents and grandparents who all helped to make the day |
