Junior sailing report for Friday 9th October 2015

posted Oct 26, 2015, 12:38 PM by Admin hycnz

It was a beautiful night for the first Friday evening junior sailing, slack tide and just the right amount of wind. I arrived to the boats all ready rigged up and ready to go, thanks Gary! I was then left to run the show, nothing like baptism by fire.

We had 4 Optimists and the Sunburst in the water pretty quickly and the 10 children out on the water together. Our safety boat men were Trevor and Mark and they had put a couple of marks out in front of the club house for us.

When we started going around them I realised I had left out instructions as to which way to go around the marks which lead to a little chaos but there were no collisions. The young sailors have really improved and there is no need for adults to be in the optimists with them now, thank goodness. The junior skippers took turns on the helm. Harrison did a great job of teaching his less confident skipper although going around in circles and being caught up on the boom. We ended with a little race and Connor looked like the fastest on the water.

A great night and I think we are nearly ready for a triangle course although we might need a wee lesson on port and starboard rounding of marks and who has the right of way when tacking upwind. Thank you to my partner, the parents and club members that helped out launching, retrieving yachts and packing up, much appreciated.
