Junior Sailing on Saturday 13th June

With winds forecast at over 30 knots and gusting from the SW it was an easy decision to do land based training with the Junior sailors on Saturday. Nine youngsters turned up and Jaime arrived with a box full of goodies, including ten wonderful little model boats, which we used for some fun races. A couple of the children thought they could take them home! He also brought some lengths of brand new, braided rope, sponsored by Quality Equipment Ltd-New Zealand Rope & Twine( 70 Hillside Rd, Glenfield 1062, phone:09-444 7742) and it was much easier for the children to tie knots with a good quality rope. It was so much fun that all the parents joined in the team games that evolved around tying knots.

Corin instructed the group on the correct way to tack an Optimist and everyone had lots of goes with this manoevre, using a fully rigged Opti on dry land. They learnt the Six Ps!!!!! of "Prepare (look around for other boats), Place (the back foot forward), Push (the tiller), Pivot (the body around to sit on the other side Facing Forwards all the time!!), Point (the boat in the right direction)" and I never learnt the sixth P. So if anyone knows it get back on Facebook and get your comment in.
It was great to have a new face turn up and welcome to Jackson who joined us for the first time, and also to his Dad, Andy. The next session is in two weeks time, on Saturday 27th June and starts at 2.00pm with HW at 15.35 so near perfect tidal conditions. Let us hope that the wind is kinder so that the juniors can get out and practice their new skills.
