Race report from Eye Spy: Harbour Race with CCYC. The course took us out of the harbour towards Rangi, over to Northern leading, down into Mechanics Bay then home. The forecast was not promising as the Southwest wind was to climb to 45knts by evening. Given the forecast the crew (Mark and Denise) hanked the No.2 headsail so we wouldn’t have to do a sail change as the wind built. We made the start on time and ended up being 2nd across the start-line. The wind was surprisingly light and we were a little under powered but we hung in there and had a good battle with Mac-attack. We were surprised to see the two 88s with the lead that we did. We were about Northhead by the time the last of the fleet were at the bridge. Around Northhead and the wind decreased further. Where is the next mark? According to the sailing instruction its over close to Rangi so we head in that general direction. We also note that Mac-attack is heading a lot higher than us. We finally sight the mark and realise we are being taken by the tide. By the time we got back to the mark we were back in second place and Appaloosa closed in on us as well. After rounding Northern leading we hoisted the Westpac kite and slipped past Mac-attack and held the lead to the finish. Kite ride all the way to the finish line with Appaloosa making inroads and passing Mac-attack but anable to catch the Eye Spy. First on line and first on corrected time. Love it when a plan comes together. Thanks to my crew for a great day on the Waitemata. |
