Race report from Eye Spy: Race is programmed for 1000hrs at Taikata after being postponed from the previous day so I turn up at 0900hrs ready to board Eye Spy with crew. I wait till 0930hrs and still no one in sight. I call Greg who is still in his Jams. Be there soonest he sais. Guess there was a little miscommunication in Saturdays text huh? We start heading out to Eye Spy and are offered Denise’s services as crew but in order to get to the start line in the shortest time we have to decline. We start the mighty 10 horse and barrel towards the start line……..barrel? We set sails on the go and end up 10 minutes late. The last of the fleet had already gone around Kauri point. We like a challenge eh Greg! The wind was around 15knts so we hoisted the “Westpac” kite as soon as we could. A great ride down the harbour albeit a little shy at times. We passed a number of boats who were single handed and no extras. Nice to be mid fleet considering our start. We round a Starboard marker outside North-head the same time as Solaise and soon after jibe and get a good jump on Solaise. We are now chasing Goucho who has done very well single handed. Eye Spy and Gaucho rounded Salthouse marker simultaneously but we were able to tack cleaner resulting in another clean set of heels. Good thing we weren’t in front as we were following the leaders at this stage……….. I didn’t know all of the course. On rounding Northern leading we had just two boats in front of us. Waterwitch and Shekinah were trucking up wind and unlikely to be caught. Eye Spy finished a respectable third on the water and second on handi-cap. Just goes to show how competitive she is after an antifoul. Thanks to the start crew and other competitors. We both had a most enjoyable day out on the Waitemata and look forward to next Sundays race. |
