posted Mar 29, 2015, 7:58 PM by Admin hycnz   [ updated May 10, 2015, 2:43 PM ]
What a amazing day we had at HYC for our Annual Y88 Match racing yesterday... we had 30 starts and 23 races in total. Racing started at 10am and the final teams racing did not get back to the clubrooms until 6pm!

Unfortunately the wind completely died for the final between the Satisfied Sistas and Pants Off.. so the final result was done on count back.

Thank you to all of the sponsors and Westpark Marine Chandlery & Electronics !

A huge thank you to umpires Raynor & Eric, Alistair & Sarah-Jane, Trevor Higgins - Sailing officers for the day - they were out on the water all day(it was a very long day!!!)!

An enormous thank you to the boat owners who loaned their boats for racing - Trevor May, Gary Swain, Denise Ellis and Craig Torckler!

Also none of you may have know but it was David and Corrina's 45th Wedding anniversary on Saturday & rather than celebrating it they spent the day feed and watering hungry crews... commitment or what???!!!!  So when you next see them congratulate them and buy them a drink!!!!

And everyone else who made the day possible - too many names to name but you know who your are and we really appreciate all of your hard work and help!

The Results:

1st The Satisfied Sistas
 2nd Pants Off
 3rd Far Canal
 4th Round Up
 5th Eye Spy
 6th Firsty
 7th Jury Rig
 8th Crack a woody
 9th Wheres the wheel
 10th Four Sail

spot prizes:

Andy Harness won the 5 day hardstand, antifoul package..so Goucho will be very happy!

Jo Howley won the 2.7 dinghy

Photos will be posted when Jos has had a chance to relax - she spent the day out on the race course taking photos of the action with the help of Jamie!

Could the teams that raced yesterday please write up race reports about your day... and e-mail them to admin@hycnz.org.nz and if your took any photos please send them too!!!

Race report from team Round up.

Well first of all was our team name, it's double banger name. First it was a round up of team members who hadn't sailed together before and secondly Round up is another pass time I'm known for onboard Gaucho.

The day dawned, wet with no wind to speak of. Our team was Pual, Mike (Satisfaction), Niall (WaterWitch) and Andy (me,Gaucho)
As I arrived at HYC I had a quick chat to Trevor about the conditions or lack thereof, then set off to meet my team for the day.
The first race was coming up, not for us though, we had our first battle in the second race. This was good as it gave us a chance to see the course and conditions.

There was some good racing in between course changes and down pours.

My biggest dread of the day was coming up against Four Sail. I watched them closely in there pre start dial-ups. Now it was our turn to face them....and sure enough the pre start was full on, it was like when your at the park and you see a big dog running down a small dog, well that's how it felt.
We managed to use the anchored 'Bliss' to our advantage to break free from Four Sail only to get hounded again soon after. We managed to break free again and get a blinder start on the line and then hold them out to take the gun. We had a couple more wins then left our worst till last, we came up against The Satisfied Sistas. Shocker start... we were close to line, but with no wind all we could do is watch as the SS sailed away from us.
Then came the race (drifter) for third position against Far Canal, we had a good start and got ahead but then Gary and the boys put the hammer down and left us battling the tide at the top mark.

Stoked with fourth place.

Thanks to the team on Round Up, good work boys!!

To win the 5 day hardstand/antifoul prize just topped off an awesome day.

Thanks to the 88 owners who trusted us with their pride and joys! The umpires  And to everyone that organised this cool event.

Round Up will be back next year for sure!

Cheers Andy

Race Report from Satisfied Sistas

Match racing again and the Satisfied Sistas...Domenica, Miranda, Ivana, Jude and Phil, where down at Hobby yacht club bright and early for the briefing, along with all the other keen sailors, from ccyc and hyc.

We Satisfied Sistas were in the 2nd pool, so started 5 mins after pool one. Racing on Nona and Wildcard. Having the four young 88 sailing round the course made it exciting, judging the strong tide and light winds, keeping a safe distance from other teams!

The weather was fine for most of the day....well we sistas can't complain, while our competitors were out there in the rain, waiting for the course markers to be changed, due to a wind shift. We were nice in dry having a coffee and reading the paper on Bliss. Thank you John for your hospitality! :-)

Outside the club Tanz and her team, did an amazing job supplying us all with delicious food, to keep our energy levels up!  Having the sandwiches toasted were so good!

We had a fantastic day....Thanks to all the teams, start boat and umpires for making it a wonderful day on the water. Not forgetting Craig and Tanz for all their hard work and the sponsors for the amazing prize pool!

Thanks Phil, we sistas had a great days racing and were so satisfied with how we got on.

Look forward to giving it our best next year!

Have a safe and relaxing Easter!  :-)

Race report from Eye Spy:

Match racing with four 88s this year…….
Craig has done us proud with sponsorship and prizes this year…….many thanks to him and all the organisers of this great event.
Crew on team Eye spy was:
Skipper Trev
Gill
Greg
Eric

We picked up Eye Spy from the marina and delivered her to Hobsonville to match up against three other 88s. No issues and keenly joined in on the briefing prior to racing. All that digested and we were lucky enough to be spectators for the first couple of races. Great to have an opportunity to see where the tide was strongest and to hone our tactics.

We drew pool 2 which meant we raced on either Wild Card or Nona throughout the round-robin………really? No eye Spy?
We managed to win our first race. Lose the second, win the third and DNF on the fourth. Yep DNF……..we took so long to get around the top mark they removed the bottom mark before we could finish. That’s it for today team………
Never mind, we get to go to the bar and keep out of the rain.

The rest of the racing was a bit of a lottery because of the light, fickle winds and the final was decided on count-back.

Well done to Pants-off and Satisfied girls for making the final.
Gill and I went to take Eye Spy back to the marina only to discover the cooling for the motor was not working again. Wild Card to the rescue……..towed us back. Thanks for that.

Guess I know what my job is this week after hours now eh.
A damn good event……long may it continue. May need to give the helm to someone else next year. Not such a good day at the office.
