Race report from Eye Spy. Four of us on Eye Spy expecting some breeze but on the run for the line we were confronted by nearly all of the fleet dead in the water just trying to make the line. It took the best part of 30 minutes for us to start and on progressing around 200 meters we dropped anchor. Others who did not drifted back towards Kauri point. Should there not be a low wind limit? Anyway……it was a lovely afternoon to sit and have a couple of ales. Elan came and rafted up on one side and “Che” on the other. Nice of them to keep us company till a little breeze came in. Cast off……….we completed a shortened course and returned to the mooring. Turned out we were the only yacht to complete the course from HYC and secured 1st place in doing so. Well done the Eye Spy crew………….lets hope for better conditions for the Harbour race eh. Race report from Nona The cycle continues. The wind blows it's ????? off during the week and a lull descends on race day. It is becoming tiresome. There is certainly no discussion on sail selection. The only point of discussion now is anchor up or down!.As a racing spectacle it was a non event and I entertain some thoughts along the line of why start a sailing race without wind. Congratulations must be extended to Eye Spy and crew for sticking it out and finishing (and indeed being one of two HYC boats who actually crossed the start line) the shortened race and thanks for the House Committee for keeping the food cooking and hot. Roll on the Harbour race. May there be wind to circumnavigate by????? Race report from Elan I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky, And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by; And the wheel’s kick and THE WINDS SONG !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and the white sail’s shaking, And a grey mist on the sea’s face, and a grey dawn breaking, I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied; AND ALL I ASK IS A WINDY DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! with the white clouds flying, And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying. I must go down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life, To the gull’s way and the whale’s way WHERE THE WINDS A LIKE A WHEETED KNIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover, And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick’s over! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE . May there be wind next time. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ. Even the fishing was terrible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!*$*$*$ Race Report from Che An open letter to those responsible for the wind: Dear God, Allah, Tāwhirimātea, Aeolus, Njord, Amun, Shinatobe, Vayu, First of all sorry if I'm missed anyone out but I am talking to you too. Why are you doing this to me and my friends? We have all organised our winter, done deals with our other halves, taken time off work, said no to big nights out on Saturday, sorted out boats and bribed our crews so that every second Sunday we can take to the water and be closer to you all and Tangaroa, and the other water deities . (I know it's not where some of you would like us to worship but really where can we be closer to your creation than on the sea?). We really don't want much just please have a look at our race calendar and send us 10-25 knots of consistent breeze (the boys would like it down the harbour one way or the other so they can get a kite up but I'm not that fussy). Sunshine would be good too but we have all got wet weather gear and a little gentle rain never hurt anyone. Thank you in advance. P.S. it would be really great if you can sort this before the next race in 2 weeks as it is a harbour race and really isn't fun for anyone spending all day trying to sail then not finishing and still getting back in the dark. P.P.S We promise we will keep coming back to worship every second Sunday and some Wednesdays and weekends in the summer too so if you could just consider that for us as well we would have a drink in the bar for you after we finish racing. |
